Delilah Cassidy, a law student from Arizona, USA had booked her flight with American Airlines. She wanted to return home after her travels in Europe.
When she got to the airport, she learned that while she was away in Europe, American Airlines had reviewed its luggage policy and introduced an applicable fee per bag.
Since Delilah had several bags, she decided to consolidate them into one. The American Airlines staff then weighed the bag and to her dismay, they said it was too heavy. She was charged $50.
Although she was not amused by the new changes, she had no option but to pay. She got out her purse and gave the staff the $50 in cash.
She was shocked when the staff refused to take the cash. The staff member told Delilah they only accepted credit cards to pay luggage charges.
Delilah gave the staff a credit card. The credit card declined. She gave out another credit card in vain. All her credit cards were declined!
The staff member told Delilah she would have to miss her flight. She would have to go back to the ticket counters to pay for the luggage using cash.
Delilah was devastated. She was exhausted and famished after a long day of travel. She also couldn’t afford to miss the flight.
She started crying and pleading with the airline’s staff member. The staff member couldn’t help her. The new rules were in force.
Suddenly, a stranger walked up to them and asked the staff member, “How much is it?” The staffer answered “$50”. The stranger said, “I got it.”
Delilah was shocked by the stranger’s question and answer. She told him, “It’s fine. Don’t worry.” The stranger was unstoppable. He handed the staffer his credit card.
Delilah was mesmerized by the stranger’s gesture. The airline staff stood in silence – they were shocked by the guy’s generosity. They swiped the card and Delilah was now free to board her flight.
The stranger then told Delilah to have a great flight and he hopped on board.
Delilah could hardly move. She was still trying to internalize the kindness of the stranger. She only came back to her senses when she heard the boarding call. She picked up her bag and rushed to the plane. She was crying as she boarded the plane.
Once inside the plane, Delilah discovered the good Samaritan was sitting in first class. She tried to give him the $50 cash she had. The guy refused to take the money. He told her, “Pay it forward”.
In other words, he was telling her that instead of paying him directly, she should show kindness to someone else in the future. Delilah was in awe.
You can imagine how stunned Delilah was when she later found out that the good Samaritan was no other than NFL Player, Jermaine Gresham!
Jermaine Gresham agreed to pose for a photo with Delilah afterward. She was ecstatic!
Delilah’s parting shot: “There are good people in this world. Be that person for someone because I know after this I sure will be.”
